A HIPAA-ready doctor booking platform for a US health start-up
Patients needed to find a doctor, book, pay, chat and share reports from their phone. Doctors needed one place to run their schedule. Security came first throughout.
Client: US healthcare start-up
iOS, Android and web portal
HIPAA-ready

The brief
A healthcare start-up in the USA wanted to make it easier for people to book doctor appointments, talk to healthcare professionals and manage their medical records, all from their phones. Patients should be able to search for doctors by category, check availability, book a time, upload medical reports and pay for the session online.
Because the app would handle medical information, security was the starting point rather than a feature. Patient data had to be protected in line with HIPAA, bookings had to be confirmed with OTP verification, and payments had to run through secure gateways.
Patients also needed real-time chat with their doctor and instant notifications about appointments and payments. Doctors needed a web portal to manage schedules, patient communication and consultations, simple enough for everyday use and able to grow with the start-up.
:: The challenges
What made it hard
01
Protecting patient data
HIPAA-ready handling of personal details and medical records, with OTP verification on bookings.
02
Real-time without delay
Chat and notifications that reach patients and doctors instantly, including last-minute changes.
03
Growth from day one
An architecture that keeps performing as patients and doctors grow from hundreds to thousands.
04
Payments people trust
Upfront fees and secure online payment for every consultation.
05
Easy for both sides
Fast browsing and booking for patients, and a portal doctors can run their day from.
How the platform fits together
Patients use the iOS and Android apps; doctors use a web portal. Both talk to one secure back end that holds doctor profiles, availability, appointments, chat and payments. Bookings are confirmed by OTP, medical reports are stored with access limited to the patient and their doctor, and appointment slots come from the doctor’s own calendar so nothing is double-booked.
